Thursday Debate: VA Scandal

Recently it has come to our country’s attention that Veterans’ Affairs (VA) officials have falsified data to hide how long veterans were waiting to see physicians at VA hospitals. President Obama has called the situation “intolerable” and “disgraceful.” Former Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney has called the situation “inexcusable.” This situation has led both Democrats and Republicans to call for the resignation of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki.

shinseki

Dozens of patients at the VA Hospital in Phoenix have died while awaiting medical care. Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, stated that investigators have evidence that the Phoenix VA Health Care System keeps two sets of records to conceal prolonged waiting times for appointments. The damning VA Inspector General report showed widespread misconduct and ridiculously long wait times at hospitals for veterans.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, told Rachel Maddow on MSNBC that the VA provides excellent care and that there are long wait times for patients to see their physicians across the United States, not just at the VA.

What do you think should be done about this reprehensible treatment of our veterans? Should Secretary Shinseki be fired? Do you think this administration will hold anyone accountable for this activity? Do you think Democrats are concerned about our veterans, or do you think that they are jumping on the “Fire Shinseki” bandwagon because they face difficult elections in November? Why do you think this has happened?

Upcoming Primary: California Governor Tuesday, June 3

On Tuesday, June 3, 2014, Californians will be voting in several primary elections for both statewide offices and for Congress. We will focus on the Governor primary.  Governor Jerry Brown is seeking reelection this year.

The Peace and Freedom Party candidate running for this seat is:

Cindy Sheehan (yes, that Cindy Sheehan) http://www.cindy2014.org/

Governor Brown is seeking a fourth term this November. He had been Governor for two consecutive terms from 1975-1983. He was reelected for a third term in 2011. On the Republican side, Tea Party favorite Tim Donnelly, Assemblyman from Twin Peaks in San Bernardino County, is in the lead. California is now using a “Top Two” primary system, in which the top two candidates advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.

timdonnelly

Donnelly is an interesting frontrunner in a state where most Republicans are socially moderate and fiscally conservative. Donnelly is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, wants to cut taxes and spending, wants to end Obamacare and wants to stop Governor Brown’s prison realignment program, which sends state prisoners to county jails. In 2006, Donnelly made a speech where he likened taking steps against illegal immigration to warfare. Donnelly also founded the Minuteman Party in California.

Donnelly faces an uphill battle since Democrats in California hold a 15-point voter registration edge. In addition, nearly 60% of California voters approve of Governor Brown’s job performance. How does Brown have such a high approval rating? In 2012, Brown signed a budget that made cuts to social services. In November of that year, voters approved Proposition 30, which raised the personal income tax rate over seven years for residents making over $250,000 and increased the sales tax by 0.25% over four years. This decreased California’s budget deficit, however Brown has stated that California is running a budget surplus. http://spectator.org/articles/59399/jerry-brown%E2%80%99s-magical-mystery-surplus Reducing the deficit is always admirable, but California still owes $340 billion in debts.

Why else would Brown have such a commanding lead in this race? California has the highest poverty rate in the United States at 22%. Over 8 million people residing in the Golden State and one quarter of its children are living below the poverty line. The unemployment rate in California is 8.7%, making it the fifth highest in the country. One third of all welfare recipients living in the United States reside in California. http://www.economist.com/news/united-states/21590933-americas-biggest-state-has-americas-biggest-poverty-problem-not-so-golden Three California cities, Stockton, Vallejo and San Bernardino, have declared bankruptcy. California also has some of the highest taxes for its residents, including a 13% top marginal tax rate on income. Housing prices are out of control, making the cost of living in this state unbearable.

California has a plethora of sanctuary cities, which are cities that do not allow municipal funds or resources to be used to enforce federal immigration laws. Last year, California essentially became a sanctuary state. Governor Brown signed the Trust Act into law. The Trust Act bans state authorities from transferring illegal aliens who have been arrested to federal law enforcement authorities if those immigrants have not committed “serious crimes.” Brown also signed AB 1236 into law, which bans employers from using E-Verify to check workers’ immigration status. This bill also prevents any counties from passing legislation to implement E-Verify. Finally, illegal aliens may also obtain drivers licenses and practice law in California. Do relaxed immigration laws correlate with a high approval rating for a Democratic Governor? Perhaps this is why Democrats are so hot to pass comprehensive immigration reform before the November general elections.

Fun fact about Governor Brown: He and singer Linda Ronstadt were an item during his first two terms.

Wednesday Debate: Where do we go from here?

mitch

Last night, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell defeated his Tea Party backed primary election opponent, Matt Bevin. Senator McConnell led Bevin 60 percent to 30 percent. McConnell will now face his Democrat opponent Kentucky Secretary of State, Alison Lundergan Grimes, in the general election in November. In his victory speech, Senator McConnell linked Grimes to President Obama and to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. In contrast, Grimes accused McConnell of causing gridlock in Washington. Conservatives are understandably upset about McConnell’s primary victory. Many were banking on Matt Bevin becoming the next Senator Ted Cruz and hoping for a fundamental change in the composition of the Republican party. Now that McConnell has won his primary election, will you vote for him and/or support him in his fight against Alison Grimes? Why or why not?

I have heard numerous conservatives say that they will vote for and support Grimes over McConnell to send a message to the Republican establishment. They argue that supporting the Democrat opponent will force Republicans like McConnell to move further to the right. Do you think its really worth supporting a Democrat? If so, for what reasons would you support a Democrat candidate over the Republican candidate in the general election?

Upcoming Primary: Georgia US Senate Tuesday, May 20

On Tuesday, May 20, 2014, Georgians will be voting in several primary elections, including those for Congress. We will focus on the US Senate primary.  Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss is not seeking reelection this year.

Here is a list of Republicans running for this seat, along with their respective websites:

Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. http://www.paulbroun.com/

Art Gardner http://www.gardnersenate.com/

Congressman Phil Gingrey, M.D. http://gingrey.com/bio/

Derrick Grayson http://www.grayson2014.com/

Karen Handel http://www.karenhandel.com/

Congressman Jack Kingston http://vote.jackkingston.org/

David Perdue https://perduesenate.com/

Here is a list of Democrats running for this seat, along with their respective websites:

Michelle Nunn http://www.michellenunn.com/

Branko Radulovacki, M.D. http://drradforsenate.com/

Todd Robinson http://www.todd4ussenate.org/

The Libertarian running for this seat is:

Amanda Swafford http://www.amandaswafford.net/

In this crowded Republican race for Senator Chambliss’ seat, 3 candidates have risen to the top: Former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, Congressman Jack Kingston and businessman David Perdue. Neither candidate is expected to clear the 50 percent threshold necessary to move on to the general election in November, thus leading to a runoff. The top 2 candidates will most likely have another 9 weeks to compete against one another. It is crucial that Republicans hold on to Georgia if they want to take over the Senate.

georgia debate

Handel and Kingston are both attacking Perdue over the time he has spent abroad and over his business career. Perdue has criticized Handel for not having a college degree.  The attacks that are likely to continue for another 9 weeks are feeding the Democrats information that they will most likely use against the Republican frontrunner in the general election.

What’s the real danger in extending the primary another 9 weeks if no clear winner is determined tomorrow? A quiet victory for Michelle Nunn, the presumed frontrunner on the Democratic side of the primary. While Republicans continue to fight with each other, Michelle Nunn, the daughter of former Senator Sam Nunn, will have 9 extra weeks without GOP opposition to fundraise and to campaign.

Michelle Nunn

Perdue is the only GOP candidate leading Michelle Nunn by an average of 3 points. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2014/senate/georgia_senate_race.html Shouldn’t the Republicans unite so that they can hold onto this seat rather than fight with each other for another 9 weeks? How do you think this election will turn out?

Georgians, please remember to vote in this primary on Tuesday, May 20, 2014!

Candidate Spotlight: Phillip Parrish for US Senate

I had the honor and privilege of interviewing Phillip Parrish, a Republican candidate for US Senate in Minnesota.  Below please find the questions I asked Mr. Parrish followed by his responses, as well as links to where you can connect with Mr. Parrish on social media.

parrish

Please tell me a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in a rural community of humble means. I became a teacher and then principal. I joined the Navy Reserve and was later commissioned as a U.S. Navy Reserve Intelligence Officer. I am married with seven children between the two of us (two adopted). I love family, the outdoors, God, my savior Jesus and our Country. I am a musician and composer and love building things.

Why do you want to be a United States Senator? Why did you decide to run for Senate this year?

As I have stated in several publications and countless conversations, the events of September 11, 2012 and other numerous events leading up to that day ignited a fire in my heart and I knew I had to do something, anything to attempt in every legal, moral and ethical way to confront and hold accountable those who are violating our constitution, liberties and God given freedoms. I have every respect for other candidates and their willingness to serve, but I say with a humble heart that due to my education and career, especially my time spent as a principal, farmer, enlisted military member and U.S. Navy Officer I have the experience, knowledge and willingness to serve as our U.S. Senator with a level of skill and integrity that reflects the true intent of what the office is meant to be.

What do you think is the biggest issue facing your constituents?

The assault on our Constitution, lawless current administration and over reach of the federal government.

What is your plan to increase job opportunities for Americans?

I would encourage investment. The United States, at present, has the highest corporate tax rate in the developed world—a deplorable fact that discourages both U.S. firms and global venture capitalists from investing in American job creation. I support lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to the global average rate of 25 percent as the first step to restoring America’s competitive advantage in the 21st Century. Since Minnesota ranks among the highest in state corporate tax rates, I believe reducing the federal corporate tax rate and making the rate permanent will increase certainty for Minnesota businesses, maximize business retention and trigger a wave of international investment in the manufacturing clusters of the Twin Cities, Duluth and St. Cloud metro areas. Nationally, reducing the corporate tax rate to 25 percent will translate into 5.3 million private-sector jobs over 10 years. Please refer to https://phillipcparrish.com/policy-points/#encourage

What, if anything, is your plan to replace the Affordable Care Act? What, if anything, do you find positive about the ACA as it stands now?

I recognize that free market solutions can avert the coming crises. By strengthening health savings accounts, increasing portability, enacting meaningful medical malpractice reform and allowing individuals to purchase insurance across state lines, Congressional lawmakers can provide a new lease on life to American medicine. By mending our broken immigration system, Congress can save hospitals and taxpayers billions. I stand for replacing Obamacare with common sense, free market solutions and I advocate creating a fund to provide catastrophic care to those in financial distress. Please refer to https://phillipcparrish.com/issues/#repeal

There is nothing positive about the ACA.

Why should people vote for you over Al Franken?

I have the experience, knowledge and willingness to serve as our U.S. Senator with a level of skill and integrity that reflects the true intent of what the office is meant to be. Al Franken has committed treason, espionage, and subversive acts against the United Sates as he is complicit in the fraud committed in ACA, Fast and Furious, Benghazi and IRS actions, along with countless other lawless acts of the current administration.

Do you consider yourself a constitutional conservative or more of a moderate?

I am a constitutional conservative.

What would you like your voters to know about you?

I have the deepest respect for them. True heroes in our country are the American people who wake up every day living and breathing the American dream – standing for freedom, liberty and the Constitution. I want them to know that I will literally sacrifice my life for them, our country and the Constitution.

What do you think about the latest developments related to the Benghazi scandal? How do you think we can make sure this sort of incident never occurs again?

Benghazi is a direct result of the ill intentions of the current administration and State Department. The current investigation lead by Trey Gowdy is imperative. It must expose the ideology of current administration and State Department–an ideology routed in a willingness to believe that by coddling people who state repeatedly that they want to destroy us can be changed or they are simply misunderstood. We must expose the truth about Islam – Sharia is not a religion as we understand the word – it is a form of government. The false narrative exploiting “religious freedom” was and is a premeditated information warfare campaign intended to exploit the very nature and character of Christians and our Constitution. To support Islam, those who follow Sharia have to support the institution of another form of government which is in direct conflict with our Constitution, liberties, and God given freedom. To support Islam, those who follow Sharia have to commit treason, espionage and subversive acts against America. We as Americans and those of us who have taken an oath of office should not hesitate to use every legal means to convict all who have and do participate in the support of Islam and Sharia. We must do a better job of articulating to the public how Sharia–a political governance movement–exploits, manipulates, and coerces to deceive and cause harm.

Do you support the formation of the Benghazi Select Committee?

Yes!

What are your thoughts on the IRS targeting of conservative groups? How do you think Congress should hold those responsible for this targeting accountable?

The IRS targeting of conservative groups was a premeditated and orchestrated initiative by the current administration. It is not conspiracy; we must help others see that it really has been going on. Too many people do not want to believe that things have regressed that far; therefore, they don’t believe it is true. We must adopt the Fair Tax legislation and abolish the IRS. We must act now to enact congressional term limits to accomplish this change.

Do you think our immigration system needs to be reformed or do you think the reform should consist of enforcing our current immigration laws? How would you propose that we reform our immigration system?

Congress has failed in its responsibility to secure our borders.  I oppose blanket amnesty for those in America illegally.  I believe that enforcing current laws and cutting federal funding to “sanctuary cities” are the first two steps Congress should take in the quest to mend our broken immigration system.

The United States is a republic of laws.  Our republic has always embraced immigrants; and, italways will!  But, at present, our immigration system is in shambles, and the rule of law that maintains our liberties and preserves our God-given rights is under assault.

As an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, I recognize that maintaining a vigilant posture in the post-9/11 era is critical to safeguarding this Republic.   Modernizing our border security efforts to include a biometric-check system and 24-hour drone surveillance remains the best deterrence for the infiltration activities of terrorist groups like Hezbollah, whose operatives have crossed the Atlantic to collude with drug Cartels in Mexico.

As a lawmaker on Capitol Hill, I will work tirelessly to ensure that adequate appropriations for drone maintenance and equipment upgrades for those standing guard remain a priority. Achieving and maintaining complete control and situational awareness of the southern border is the best way to stem the tide of illegal immigration that is costing U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars in welfare and healthcare subsidies.

I oppose providing federal benefits to those here illegally and I support the expedited deportation of illegal immigrants with criminal records.  I support 10th Amendment protected local solutions to illegal immigration and I believe English should be America’s official language.

As an advocate for improving the potential for high-paying jobs in Minnesota, I recognize that Congress should concentrate on expanding the annual outlay of H-1B Visas from 65,000 to 130,000 in an effort to attract the best and brightest of the world’s high-skilled labor to energize America’s economic outlook. On the Republican side, this will be an interesting primary to watch because it has magnified the schism between establishment Republicans, led by Senator McConnell, and constitutional conservatives, led by Matt Bevin.

bevin

Some believe that this race will define the political landscape for years to come. If Senator McConnell were to win this primary election, then it has been argued that the Republican party will move further to the left, becoming more and more Democrat-lite. If Bevin were to win, then the message that the people want to go back to conservative principles would send the establishment Republicans into a tailspin. Please see this excellent analysis on this race: http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2014/04/14/5-weeks-to-may-20th-2014-the-day-to-determine-the-republic/

If Senator McConnell survives this primary, he would battle Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Grimes for his seat. McConnell and Grimes are currently in a dead heat, with Grimes leading by 45 percent.  http://www.courier-journal.com/story/politics-blog/2014/05/12/mitch-mcconnell-has-wide-primary-lead-but-general-election-is-close/9002133/

Candidate Spotlight: Joshua Black for Florida State Representative

I had the honor and privilege of interviewing Joshua Black, a Republican candidate for Florida House District 68.  Below please find the questions I asked Mr. Black followed by his responses, as well as links to where you can connect with Mr. Black on social media.

Joshua Black

Please tell me a little bit about yourself

I was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, but have lived in the St Petersburg, Florida area for most of the last six-plus years. I am the second of ten children, all homeschooled. I am recently married, and our first child is expected to take his or her first breath around the time of the August primary! My employment background is mostly small-time jobs, but I excel in customer service-related positions (restaurant server, customer service phone agent, taxi driver, food delivery, etc.). This background serves me well for this position, because I am forced to live on a shoestring, and I therefore have a vested interest in seeing my government do the same.

Please tell me a little bit about your district

The boundaries of the district are Ulmerton Road on the North, Central Ave on the South, Tampa Bay on the East and either the railroad tracks or 34th Street North, whichever is more west. A wide variety of people live within these boundaries. I meet many of them as customers for my taxi service, and I met many more during my other jobs. Some are rich, some are poor. Some have great jobs, some are on welfare. Some are long-time residents, some are recent immigrants. Some have never received a parking ticket and some are still breaking the law when they ask me for a ride. Diverse is the best word. Democrats make up 39% of the registered voters, Republicans 36%, Independents 24%, smaller parties the remaining 1%.

Why do you want to be a Florida State Representative?

I’m running for state rep because I’m tired of waiting for the politicians to give me a candidate worth voting for. By the time I get to the polls every cycle, it seems that what differences there are between the candidates are superficial and immaterial, especially to the values that I hold dear. I understand the concept of having a big tent, but why does that mean adopting positions I find reprehensible? Why doesn’t it mean going outside my “base” to explain my positions one on one? The former basically creates a larger Democrat Party with no other options, the latter gives hope for conservative values to benefit a wider swath of the community.

Why did you decide to run for state representative this year?

I thought there was an opening. The last big name Republican that ran for this seat flubbed badly. I figured that I could do better than that. The Democrat who beat him stands for policies that hurt the poor and middle class, in spite of what he and his party claim. I didn’t think that it would be easy, and I committed last year to seeing it all the way through, no matter what. I didn’t count on a somewhat big name [Bill Young II] (well, it’s his dad’s name) challenging me in the primary, but I think that I can overcome that, because I can’t find any differences between what he pledges to do and what the Democrat incumbent pledges to do.

What do you think is the biggest issue facing your constituents?

Taxes. I know this sounds like the Republican line, but consider this fact: between the federal, state and local governments, the citizens of Pinellas Park and Saint Petersburg face a tax burden average of $16,000 per person, per year. Whom does this policy harm the most? The poor, because they don’t have any extra with which to lift themselves from their condition after the governments have all taken their cuts. Now, some of this burden is hidden (taxes and regulations on businesses, for example), but, if you ever try to own your own business, or you start earning too many wages to receive tax-funded assistance, you quickly realize that big, overspending government is not your friend. Why is it that small businesses have to bear the full cost of the taxes, but big businesses get tax breaks to relocate? Why aren’t we giving all businesses the same tax break? Do we really care about jobs here in Florida?

What is your plan to increase job opportunities for Americans?

Cut taxes. As I explained in my previous answer, the money that the governments combine to siphon away from the economy is killing the opportunities for those who don’t start out with much. I intend to roll back those taxes permanently, so that we can realize growth here in Pinellas permanently. People need to be able to keep what they have earned, so that they can choose how to reinvest in the local economy. Lower taxes in Florida mean jobs and growth for Pinellas.

What, if anything, is your plan to replace the Affordable Care Act? What, if anything, do you find positive about the ACA as it stands now?

I am not a Congressional candidate, but, as a constituent of Florida Congressional District 13, I feel that government has no place in the marketplace. Mandates and taxes only rob the poor of the choices they need to be able to make in order to prosper. The only people who benefit from this system are those who are politically connected and wealthy. There is nothing positive to be found in a system like that. Let’s abolish it and return to the days when a hospital stay cost only about a month’s worth of wages, instead of three full years.

Why should people vote for you over your opponent?

For the primary: When my opponent was first rumored to be thinking about this position, the people most delighted about this prospect were lobbyists in Tallahassee. That’s a bad sign, if you’re not politically connected and/or wealthy.

For the general: The incumbent [Democrat Dwight Dudley] has spent his entire term talking about how the scope of the state government needs to be greater, even though such a case would overburden those who don’t earn much more. It is not compassionate to squeeze family doctors out of the market by expanding Medicaid. It is compassionate to cease confiscating people’s earnings so that they can purchase the necessary nutrition that they need in order to stay healthy.

Do you consider yourself a constitutional conservative or more of a moderate?

I am very much a constitutional conservative. Moderates are lying when they take the oath of office.

What would you like your voters to know about you?

I would like them to know that I feel their pain, because I am one of them. I don’t fit the bill of the ordinary politician, because I actually intend to keep my word. I suffer personally under the current policies in effect, so I have a personal stake in changing them.

What are your thoughts regarding Common Core? How would you improve the educational system in Florida?

Common Core is simply the latest in the government’s efforts to raise our children for us without our approval. This plan has been going on since the creation of government-funded schools in America. Government control or even regulation of education is a terrible idea that has produced ever worsening results, no matter how much money or how many new rules we throw at the system.

It doesn’t work, because it can’t. Children don’t share DNA with a government. They share the DNA of their parents. God has given them to parents, who alone are responsible for their growth to maturity. Even in the government-run schools, only students whose parents (biological or adopted) invest in them excel, especially if both parents are still together (just like the DNA in their child). By siphoning away parents’ and grandparents’ earnings to build a machine that doesn’t work, the government is hindering parents from the work they could do to help their own children succeed.

What’s worse is that people who push these programs know the facts that I just stated.

What are your thoughts on the IRS targeting of conservative groups? How do you think Congress should hold those responsible for this targeting accountable?

First, 99% of Congress should resign. They do not have any intention of upholding the Constitution, so they need to get out of the way of people who do.

Second, when that Congress is inaugurated, they should revoke the contract with the IRS that allows this private organization to act on behalf of the US Treasury and Congress (a direct contradiction of the separation of powers intended by the Constitution).

Third, they should submit a Constitutional Amendment to the States for ratification that specifically repeals the 16th Amendment.

Fourth, they should impeach the current President and all of his appointees, executive and judicial. That would be a good start.

Do you support the Second Amendment? Why or why not?

The Second Amendment to the US Constitution was written in response to the act of oppression by the government of Great Britain whereby the inhabitants of the colonies were prohibited from obtaining the latest weaponry that was available to the British aggressors. This amendment was written to ensure that, should the newly formed federal government become similarly oppressive, the People would have sufficient means of overcoming its evil designs. Knowing how wicked those in government can become, I wholeheartedly support this amendment.

How can people best help your campaign?

People can help by reading my website, www.JoshuaBlack2014.com, and finding out where I actually stand on the issues. Then, speak to your neighbors to see where they stand and point a few in the right direction. I think that one on one interaction will win this campaign because I won’t be receiving big money from outside interests.

Speaking of money, you can donate online at the website, or you can donate by mail to the address on the Contact Page.

This Sunday, May 18, I will be having a Shoestring Banquet ($10/plate) at Freedom Lake Park in Pinellas Park (where US 19 meets 49th Street North), between 1:30 and 4PM. So come on by and join us!

dubya

In 2012, former President George W. Bush declined an invitation to attend the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Tampa Florida. President Bush is certainly a polarizing figure and many breathed a sigh of relief when he neither spoke at the 2012 RNC nor campaigned for Presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Do you think President Bush’s presence at the 2012 RNC would have made a difference, either negative or positive, in Romney’s Presidential campaign? Moving forward, do you think the RNC should ask President Bush to speak at the 2016 RNC and/or campaign with the next Republican nominee? Why or why not? Who would you like to see featured at the 2016 RNC?

Upcoming Primary: Nebraska US Senate Tuesday, May 13

On Tuesday, May 13, 2014, Nebraskans will be voting in several primary elections, including those for Congress. We will focus on the US Senate primary.  Republican Senator Mike Johanns is not seeking reelection this year.

Here is a list of Republicans running for this seat, along with their respective websites:

Sid Dinsdale http://www.sidforsenate.com/

Clifton R. Johnson http://cliftonjohnson.vpweb.com/

Bart McLeay http://www.bartmcleay.com/

Shane Osborn http://www.shaneosborn.com/

Ben Sasse https://www.sassefornebraska.com/

The Democrat running for this seat is:

Dave Domina http://www.davedomina.com/

On the Republican side, this will be an interesting primary to watch because it has caused a division between national and local tea party groups. In one corner is Ben Sasse, President of Midland University.

sasse

Sasse has been endorsed by Senate Conservatives Fund, FreedomWorks, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). In the other corner is Shane Osborn, former Nebraska State Treasurer and U.S. Navy veteran.

osborn

FreedomWorks originally endorsed Osborn, but, in an unprecedented move, switched their endorsement to Sasse. Matt Kibbe, President of FreedomWorks, stated that Osborn had “formed allegiances with Mitch McConnell and the K Street lobbying class” that signaled a “progression away from the grass roots.” However, 52 Nebraska tea party groups objected to the involvement of national tea party groups in this primary. The winner of this primary is expected to be victorious in November.

Nebraskans, please remember to vote in this primary on Tuesday, May 13, 2014!

We Are Living in 1984

Unfortunately, I do not mean that we are living in the year 1984. If we were, Ronald Reagan would be President, spandex and big hair would be our go-to style choices, Jane Fonda would be teaching us aerobics, the Rubik’s Cube would be everyone’s game of choice and we would have our MTV.

80s

Instead, I am referring to George Orwell’s novel 1984. The novel is set in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation. In 1984, the political system is under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite that persecutes independent thinking as “thoughtcrimes.” The Party leader is Big Brother, who enjoys a cult of personality. Big Brother and the Party justify their oppressive rule in the name of the greater good. In Orwell’s world, the Ministry of Plenty rations and controls food, goods and domestic production. The Ministry of Truth controls information, such as news, entertainment and education. Sound familiar?

As in 1984, the National Security Agency (NSA) is engaging in mass surveillance by collecting and storing all phone records of all American citizens. NSA spying is governed by secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) courts. To illustrate the consequences of such a mass spying program, a 2005 Internal Revenue Service (IRS) training manual instructed agents to take information provided by the Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) Special Operations Division to begin new “independent” investigations of American taxpayers. Not only has it been revealed that the IRS has been using information obtained through the NSA to launch criminal investigations of American citizens, the IRS has admitted that it improperly targeted conservative groups, thus suppressing free speech.

Today Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chair Lee E. Goodman stated that, “The right has begun to break the left’s media monopoly, particularly through new media outlets like the internet, and I sense that some on the left are starting to rethink the breadth of the media exemption and internet communications.” Goodman, a Republican, went on to say, “The picking and choosing has started to occur. There are some in this building that think we can actually regulate.” If that were too occur than Goodman is  “concerned about disparate treatment of conservative media.” What is interesting about the FEC is that, in 1986, Lois Lerner was the head of the enforcement division at the FEC. Lerner, the former Director of Exempt Organizations at the IRS, is the woman at the center of the IRS targeting scandal. One of Lerner’s former colleagues, Craig Engle, said that Lerner harbors a “suspicion” that conservative groups are intentionally flouting the law. Judicial Watch has obtained email exchanges between Lerner and FEC enforcement attorneys indicating that she had provided the FEC confidential tax returns of conservative groups. The IRS is persecuting conservative groups who are engaging in independent thought. It is clear that the IRS is this administration’s Ministry of Truth.

What greater good is this administration protecting by using federal agencies to suppress free speech? What greater good is worth the willing sacrifice of individual liberty? Imagine if a Republican administration had been so blatant at suppressing free thought and free speech? The Democrats would prosecute any Republican involved in such contemptible behavior. Remember when liberals protested against The Man? Now they have become The Man. They have shown themselves to be cowards in the face of opposition. They brand anyone who disagrees with their views a racist, a sexist, a classist or any other form of -ist they deem appropriate. They wield federal agencies like weapons to shut down those who dare to disagree with them. They control the mainstream media so that only their message is told. Now they want the FEC to regulate conservative media outlets like The Blaze and Drudge Report, further suppressing free thought. They rally around their Big Brother, who has certainly enjoyed a cult of personality.

Remember when in 2008 then Senator Obama said “we are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America?” To bring about this transformation, American could no longer be a free country. We would have to forsake our individual liberty for the greater good. President Obama’s signature law, Obamacare, has taken away our freedom of choice for the greater good of insuring the uninsured. In true Big Brother fashion, President Obama has called upon his Ministry of Truth, the IRS, to enforce Obamacare. The personal information with which Americans enter into healthcare.gov goes directly to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and to the IRS. Why does the DHS need to be involved in health insurance? President Obama uses his executive power to ignore parts of laws with which he disagrees, to selectively enforce laws and to legislate whatever he wants. When Obama said that he wanted to fundamentally transform our country, the hairs on the backs of our necks should have stood at attention. The tyranny he promised us has arrived. 1984 is here. And we are living it.
